 If you are having any form of refractive issue, I am sure you would have used medically prescribed eye glasses or contact lenses. Wearing Contact lenses every day is a nuisance to some, while some get used to it. As a fashion statement, compared to past, wearing eyeglasses looks cool but on the other hand you have to keep updating your glass frames with the current trend.

What is LASIK?

LASIK is an acronym that stands for Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis. With age or due to some event when the shape of cornea is insufficient to curve the light rays properly on to the retina, a blurry image is formed. People find it difficult to drive in night, reading becomes a tedious work.

LASIK can be a real help to you in this scenario. LASIK is used to correct three main types of refractive errors: nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), presbyopia and astigmatism.

How LASIK is done?

LASIK procedure is a day care treatment. It requires maximum of 3-4 hrs of hospital stay, while only 30 minutes as total operating time. Your eye doctor will take detailed medical history and runs a comprehensive medical examination to check all the eye defects before proceeding for the LASIK.

Corneal topographer is used to create a detailed, point-by-point map of the shape of your cornea to plan the reshaping. Good news is LASIK is painless, just before the surgery, numbing eye drops are applied to your eye to prevent any discomfort during the procedure. 

LASIK surgery involves three basic steps:

  • Flap elevation – A mechanical surgical tool called a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser is used to create a thin, circular flap in the cornea. The surgeon then folds back this hinged flap to access the underlying cornea.
  • Corneal reshaping – An excimer laser is used to reshape the corneal surface. This highly specialized laser uses a cool ultraviolet light beam to remove small amounts of tissue from the cornea to reshape it.
  • Flap closure – The corneal flap is laid back in place, where it adheres to the corneal stroma without stitches.

Am I an Ideal candidate for LASIK?

IS LASIK for everyone? the answer is no. Just like any other surgery, LASIK also has some indications and contraindications. LASIK is not suitable for people below 18 years of age.

Medical conditions also affects treatment outcomes .Your eye doctor will ask your medical history because certain advanced autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, may influence postoperative healing.

Certain conditions like dry eyes, Glaucoma or cataracts may need a change in treatment course. In addition, certain diseases such as diabetes or HIV can cause additional concerns for a LASIK operation. Talk to your doctor about any other health concerns that you have.

If your prescription eyeglasses has been stable from a year or two, you are having good chances of successful LASIK.

Patients with thin corneas, large pupils or previous corneal surgeries are also taken into consideration to predict outcome.
