When is the right time for Eye Examination?

Birth to 24 months

Baby’s visual system develops in their initial months of life with other milestones like crawling, walking and hand-eye coordination. To ensure infant’s growth, first comprehensive eye exam can be scheduled at 6 months of age. Since there is a higher risk of eye and vision problems if your infant was born premature or is showing signs of developmental delay, your eye doctor may require more frequent visits to keep watch on his or her progress.

Age 2-5 years

During preschool age fine motor skills are developed and school prepares them to read and write, so they need to develop hand and eye movement. Children take part in activities like drawing, painting, sculpting. This is the time when parents need to look for conditions like Lazy eye (amblyopia) and squinting.

School Age 6-18 years vision

Children with visual impairment may show symptoms like:

  • Short attention span
  • Headaches with lack of focus
  • Frequent blinking and dryness of eye

  • Double vision
  • Poor reading comprehension

What’s the difference between vision screening and a comprehensive eye exam?

A comprehensive eye exam diagnoses eye disease. Eye drops are used to dilate (widen) the pupil during the exam. This gives your ophthalmologist a fuller view inside the eyes. With dilation and other special testing, signs of eye disease are more evident. The American Academy of Ophthalmology advises parents to seek a comprehensive eye exam if:

  • Vision screening is inconclusive or cannot be done
  • Referred by a pediatrician or school nurse
  • Children with medical conditions (such as Down syndrome, prematurity, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, neurofibromatosis) or a family history of amblyopia, strabismus, retinoblastoma, congenital cataracts or glaucoma are at higher risk for developing pediatric eye problems.

Eye doctor look for all the visual activities like:

  • Distance and near vision
  • refractive errors
  • Binocular vision: how the eyes work together as a team
  • Focusing
  • Eyelids drooping
  • Peripheral Vision
  • Color Vision
  • Steriopsis – ability to see in 3 dimensions
  • Hand-eye Coordination
  • Tracking

The doctor will also examine the area around the eye and inside the eye to check for any eye diseases or health conditions. This would also be the time to address any concerns or issues your child has that might indicate a vision problem.

Visual Trouble Signs

Symptoms that require immediate attention from an eye doctor:

  • A white pupil
  • Sudden swelling or drooping of a lid, accompanied by a red eye
  • Enlarged cornea in one or both eyes

Other conditions, which are not as urgent but still, require attention by a specialist:

  • One or both eyes turning in or out
  • Tearing, redness, or discharge that lasts for several days
  • One pupil that appears larger than the other

An early diagnosis or attention to small eye problem not only save child from complex procedures in future but also helps in achieving age milestones.
